What Can Chiropractors Treat?

There’s a wide range of ailments that Chiropractors can and do treat.

The most common conditions people seek help from a chiropractor for are:

  • Neck pain
  • Low back pain
  • Headaches

The cause of this pain could be from an auto accident, a repetitive use injury, or it may have just recently shown up in your life, and you don’t really know why. One thing for sure is you want some relief.

Chiropractic adjustments and exercises are fantastic solutions to treat neck & low back pain as well as headaches. If this is what you are suffering from please book a 15-minute consultation with one of our chiropractors today to begin your journey to wellness.

Improve Your Body’s Function

A second group of people seek help from a chiropractor, not because of specific pain, but rather due to an inability to do an activity they once loved.

Examples of this could be:

  • Someone who loves to garden but finds it difficult to do now.
  • Someone who loved physical activities such as running but finds it difficult to do now
  • Someone who just isn’t able to play with their kids or grandkids due to discomfort or lack of movement

All three of these examples describe someone lacking some function ability that they once had.

The great news is there’s good possibility of regaining that functionality you once had.

How does a chiropractor achieve this?

We use three forms of treatment to improve the function and movement of your body.

  • Chiropractic adjustments
  • Exercises & stretches
  • Lifestyle advice

The goal is always to optimize the function of your body for the activity you want to enjoy. For this reason, your treatment plan is 100% customized to your abilities and goals.

We discuss your current struggles and where you would like to be during an initial appointment.

From there we plot a plan to get you there. after your first appointment, you will have an idea of how many sessions and types of exercises you will need to put in to reach your goal.

Are Chiropractic Treatments and Spinal Manipulation Safe?

It’s probably the most common question we are asked day in and day out by new patients.

Are Chiropractic Spinal Adjustments safe?

It’s a common fear of new patients that receiving spinal manipulation and adjustments could hurt, or cause more issues. However, keep in mind, as Chiropractors we are also doctors.

In Nova Scotia Chiropractors can order x-rays. We also work with our family GP if, through the course of our examination and diagnosis, we feel that further testing is appropriate. If ever a course of treatment is questionable we always use every tool at our disposal to ensure the safety of our patients.

Treatment plans are always customized to your body, condition, and comfort level.

Studies Have Proven the Safety of Chiropractic Treatments

There have been numerous studies done by both professionals inside and outside the Chiropractic community. The results of these studies again, and again point to the fact that Chiropractic is a very safe option to treat not just back and neck pain, but many musculoskeletal and nervous system conditions.

What’s the Alternative?

The alternatives to chiropractic care may only treat the symptom, not the underlying misalignment, imbalance or muscle tightness/weakness. Most often these alternative treatments rely on painkillers, anti-inflammatories or muscle relaxant medications.

The long term effects these types of medications pose a much greater risk than chiropractic adjustments. Not to mention, these pharmaceutical products are merely band-aids meant to mask the pain or discomfort you feel, while never actually treating the root cause of the condition.

Become the best version of you!

Even after the pain has subsided, as chiropractors, our goal is to help you reach your optimal level of health and wellness.

Why?

So you can enjoy the activities you LOVE to do in your life. Whether that’s gardening, golf, running or just playing with your children or grandchildren.

We work with you to resolve the pain, isolate the cause and help you make the lifestyle changes necessary to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

If you’re currently struggling with pain or discomfort come in for a 15-minute consultation with one of our Chiropractic professionals. We will determine if Chiropractic is the right course of treatment for you and get you on your right path to wellness.

What is sciatica?

The sciatic nerve begins in your lower back and runs down each leg to your feet. It is comprised of nerves from your lower back and pelvis.

Sciatic NerveSciatica is a condition in which this nerve becomes irritated, either by a joint, disc, or muscle. The irritation causes nerve pain that may radiate down your legs. Sciatica can also cause your legs to feel weak, or numb.

Sciatica carries risk of injury from falling due to leg numbness or weakness. In severe cases, a person suffering from sciatica may lose control of their bowels or bladder. This is a situation which requires emergency treatment.

Potential causes of Sciatica can be

  • A herniated or degenerating disc
  • A narrow spinal canal,
  • Inflammation or loss of motion of a vertebral joint
  • Tightness or inflammation of a spinal muscle

Risk factors

Most people who develop sciatica begin to notice symptoms somewhere between 30 and 50 years old.

Risk factors for developing sciatica include –

  • Having extra weight on your body
  • A history of falls or accidents, even if you did not have back pain at the time
  • Having a job involving lifting heavy objects frequently or sitting for long periods of time.

What are My Options for Treatment?

There are several options available for sciatica relief, such as pharmaceuticals, chiropractic, and exercise:

1. Pharmaceutical treatment options

While pharmaceutical treatments may ease the pain of sciatica, they are often only temporary solutions. Sometimes it’s necessary to get immediate relief of pain, and certain pharmaceuticals can work well to help you feel better. However, these medications simply mask the pain and do not fix the cause.

Medications for sciatica are oftentimes expensive and may cost hundreds of dollars if not covered by our Nova Scotia MSI program or private health insurance. That’s not to mention the side effects, which include stomach complaints, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, and nausea.  And that can be just from over the counter pain relievers.

If you are prescribed an opiod, the risks are higher. Taking opioid pain medication over a long period can cause addiction or dependency, and there is potential (albeit low) for a fatal drug overdose.

2. Non-pharmaceutical solutions

Chiropractic care is a safe, non-pharmaceutical choice for sciatica. Your chiropractor will work with you to establish an appropriate plan to not only get you out of pain but to prevent it from coming back.

While chiropractic care for sciatica requires multiple visits, chiropractic doesn’t just mask the pain – it helps to solve the underlying problem.

On average sciatica sufferers have 10-12 visits* in order to relieve radiating nerve pain and numbness. However, mobility is improved in just two to three visits!

KEY TAKEAWAY: Chiropractic care treats the cause of your sciatica symptoms rather than masking them. While several visits are required results on average are very good and in most causes radiating nerve pain and numbness can be relieved.

In addition, your chiropractor will provide you with at home instructions to help you manage your symptoms:

  • Exercises to help you keep the pain away for the long term.
  • Sometimes advise on ergonomics in the workplace, while sleeping, or driving
  • Will also help you be pain-free while you enjoy your normal activities.

Safety of chiropractic care

It’s estimated that each year in the United States, 140,000 people die as a result of medication reactions. People who take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) long-term for pain relief are at risk for developing gastrointestinal complications, such as ulcers.

Chiropractic care is a safer alternative to pharmaceutical sciatica treatment. In fact, a research study reported by the British Medical Journal in 1999 found that chiropractic care ranks among the safest treatment options available.

KEY TAKEAWAY: Research has shown that chiropractic ranks among the safest treatment options available for sciatica and low back pain.

The risk of complications from taking NSAIDs long-term is 400 times greater than the risk of complications from receiving neck adjustments as part of chiropractic treatment.
