How are naturopathic doctors educated?
Students are first required to complete a university degree with premedical courses in order to attend an accredited naturopathic college. Naturopathic education includes four years of training in the medical sciences (anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pathology, and differential diagnosis), pharmacology, naturopathic principles and therapeutics, and 1200 hours of supervised clinical experience. Naturopathic therapies include clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, physical medicine, bodywork, and stress and lifestyle counseling. Nadia has additional training in bodywork techniques including the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy, abdominal Visceral Manipulation, and Neurological Integration System.
Graduates must pass North American licensing exams before registration is granted to practice as a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND). ND’s are also required to fulfill ongoing continuing education requirements and follow ethical practices in order to maintain licensure. Nadia is registered with the Nova Scotia Association of Naturopathic Doctors (NSAND) and the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND).
What can I expect during my appointments?
Nadia takes the time needed to understand you and all the factors that may influence your health. You will first be asked to complete a detailed health questionnaire, designed to help identify your health goals and concerns and provide a thorough health history. After the initial consultation and assessment, Nadia will make recommendations tailored to your individual needs and goals. Periodic follow-up appointments will help to monitor your progress, continue with bodywork treatments, and make adjustments in your naturopathic health program to ensure you are moving towards your goals. Information from physical exam, blood, urine and/or saliva testing may also assist in making assessments and tracking progress.
Nadia sees herself as a partner in your healthcare and encourages you to take charge of your health and be an active participant in the process. She welcomes your questions and feedback during your appointments so you can understand your body and its inherent healing processes.
What types of health concerns can a naturopathic doctor help with?
Many people see Nadia because their health isn’t as good as it used to be and feel like something is out of balance. Many have been told that all their lab tests are normal and nothing is wrong with them, yet they know that something is not quite right. Some people already feel pretty healthy but want to take a more proactive and preventative approach to their health and get a sense of what else they can do to be even healthier. With all of these examples, there is a common thread: a desire to be more proactive with one’s health and to feel better.
