Getting Relief from Tendonitis – Treatment Options and Cold Laser Therapy

Tendonitis is the inflammation of a tendon in the body can cause swelling and pain in the affected area.

Common forms of tendonitis include Achilles tendonitis and Tennis elbow.

Tendonitis can affect any part of the body where a tendon is located. The most common areas of the body are:

  • Elbow
  • Shoulder
  • Hip
  • Knee
  • Heel
  • Base of thumb

Tendonitis is most often caused by physical movements, such as in sports or working out, as well as overuse such as standing for prolonged periods of time.

What are Tendons?

Tendons are the rubbery cords that connect your muscles to bones. They’re responsible for bones and joints moving as muscles contract to move, lift, run etc.

Tendons have an important job, and when they’re swollen or inflamed it can drastically interfere with our regular everyday lives.

Symptoms of most tendonitis are

  • Pain that worsens with movement
  • Swelling, heat and even redness at the location of the injury
  • A lump that may form along the tendon

What can you do to treat tendonitis?

Resting is key. You can’t continue to do the same activity which caused the acute injury. Taking time away from the activity will ensure you do not further aggravate the issue.

If there is swelling or redness using an ice pack can reduce swelling and pain. Be sure not to apply an ice pack direct to the skin. Instead, wrap it in a cloth to avoid cold burn on your skin.

Painkillers and Steroids

Steroids have been used to reduce swelling and inflammation, however, they do not repair the damage. Likewise, painkillers can be used to provide relief from the physical symptoms, but will not heal the tendon.

Low-Level Cold Laser Therapy

Low-level laser therapy doesn’t work to just reduce inflammation and relieve pain. Cold laser therapy actually works at the cellular level to accelerate healing and regenerates tissues to aid in healing tendonitis.

We use the Bioflex laser device, which is approved by Health Canada and has had numerous studies completed on its effectiveness to reduce pain, inflammation and stimulate healing.

While there are more invasive procedures, such a surgery, they have a far longer recovery time.

Specific Exercises & Stretches

Reducing inflammation and swelling is the first step for tendonitis recovery. Once that has occurred light stretching and specific exercises for the affected area can be introduced.
