The Dangers of Poor Posture Beyond Back & Neck Pain

The consequences of poor posture are numerous, and while some of the dangers are widely understood, others are less obvious. Most people know that good posture creates a more confident and professional appearance, yet fail to understand the health implications of sitting and slouching.

Spinal Curvature, Pain, and Chronic Illness

Sitting for extended periods of time in unnatural positions leads to changes in the natural curvature of the spine that may, in turn, cause additional health issues. Poor posture can cause debilitating pain in the neck, shoulders, back, jaw, and head. This can lead to chronic illnesses affecting the bones, nerves, and joints. These include carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, and disc degeneration.

Balance, Coordination, and Stress

The spine is the backbone of the skeleton, and, as such, improper posture interferes with balance, coordination, and the ability to absorb shock and stress. It is possible to avoid these problems by sitting up straight with the feet flat on the floor and the legs at a slight angle. Avoid looking up or too far down at electronics such as computers, which contributes to poor posture. In the video below Dr. Jason Fox gives tips on proper posture while sitting.

Cardiovascular Disease and Varicose Veins

Dr. Jason Fox asserts that cardiovascular health problems are associated with sitting for extended periods of time, and, further, that the risk is magnified by poor posture. This is the reason that “sitting and slouching” is likened to smoking and replacing it as a leading cause of heart disease. Varicose veins are one consequence of this practice, given they form due to a loss of elasticity commonly associated with a sedentary lifestyle. This can be countered by getting up to move around and stretch every 30-60 minutes if you work at a desk all day.

Digestive Problems

Bad posture can affect digestion, because the spine may compress the digestive organs to the extent that they are unable to absorb nutrients effectively. This results in slowed metabolism and leads to nutritional deficiencies that range from minor to severe. Over time, these metabolic problems lower immunity and vitality and contribute to the development of secondary conditions.

The Lungs and Respiratory Issues

Another problem that can arise is diminished lung capacity. Improper posture can affect the oxygenation of the blood and tissues, which interferes with the functioning of the heart, brain, and other vital organs. Ultimately, this leads to fatigue, lethargy, clouded thinking, dyspnea, and cardiovascular distress.

We aren’t saying that “if you have poor posture, all of these conditions will happen to you”. Rather we want to bring to your attention that poor posture affects far more than just back, neck and shoulder pain.

Take 5 minutes to watch the video above of Dr. Jason Fox discussing proper posture while standing and sitting. The first step to improving your posture is keeping it top of mind so that you catch yourself when slouching and can correct it.

Bioflex Laser Therapy in Halifax

Bioflex laser therapy offers patients a treatment option for a wide variety of conditions. The laser uses low-intensity light that is taken from an array of superluminous diodes, resulting in the acceleration of healing, the elimination of pain, and a significant decrease in inflammation.

Improvement can be experienced quite quickly, often in as few as two weeks, making laser therapy an attractive alternative to other forms of treatment.

NOTE: Different patients respond differently to low-level laser therapy. It’s important to book a consultation with our laser therapist to discuss how the laser could help you.

How Can Laser Therapy Accelerate Healing in the Body?

As the laser goes to work, energy production in the body’s cells increases. The body’s response to this increase in energy production is an acceleration of the healing process, making Bioflex laser an ideal treatment for a number of inflammatory conditions and injuries.

What Can Laser Therapy Treat?

A wide range of ailments can be treated successfully with laser therapy. Among them are:

  • Sports injuries
  • Musculoskeletal disorders
  • Arthritis
  • Chronic and degenerative diseases
  • and more…

Why is the Bioflex Laser Superior to Other Laser Therapy Devices?

In comparison with its competitors, Bioflex has far more research backing it up. Functionally, the laser stands out from the rest, given it utilizes not one, but two, light sources: red and infrared. This makes the Bioflex laser system the most reliable device to produce the desired results.

How Many Treatments Will I Require?

The treatment schedule is initially broken down into three sessions per week for a period of two weeks. After these sessions have been completed, our chiropractor or laser therapist meets with you for re-evaluation. At this point, you may have made considerable progress. Typically, the treatments go on for another six sessions, and most patients finish after their 12th session.

How Long Do Treatments Take?

On the average, treatments range from 15 minutes to one hour in duration. Non-complex laser procedures usually last no longer than 30 minutes, making the process quick, convenient, and stress-free, while maximizing patient comfort and satisfaction.

What are Some Ailments You Have Treated Successfully?

The list of conditions that have been treated successfully is extensive and includes

  • Tendonitis
  • Arthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Sprains and strains
  • Nerve pain in the arms and legs

Patients suffering from pain and inflammation following knee replacement frequently find that their symptoms diminish following treatment with bioflex laser therapy, which can reduce overall recovery time.

Treatment Options for TMJ

Often TMJ is treated by a dentist or orthodontist. A primary treatment option is an in-mouth appliance that is to be worn for several months or up to a year, 24/7, even while eating.

The success rate on these in-mouth appliances is good, but they can affect eating and speech. Not to mention the cost can be very high.

Alternative treatments which have been proven effective both on their own as well as in conjunction with your dentist or orthodontist are:

  • Chiropractic
  • Massage Therapy
  • Laser Treatment

These three alternatives are far less invasive than an in-mouth appliance and are a viable treatment option to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with TMJ.

Alternative treatments for TMJ are far less invasive and can save you from wearing an in-mouth appliance for months, even while eating.

Of course, self-diagnosing in today’s Internet age can be dangerous. Your first defense against jaw pain should be a consultation with a professional practitioner who can help determine the right treatment regimen for you.
